5 Keys to Increasing Profit from Your List
By Jimmy D. Brown
The success of your newsletter can be boiled down to one thing: People buy from those they know, like and
trust.
As such, how well you use your newsletter to instill this trust and build relationships will determine how much
money you make from your list.
Here then are five keys to increasing profits from your list…
1. Meet Their Expectations
When your subscribers first joined your list, they did so because you told them they’d receive certain types of
content at certain intervals. And most marketers deliver the promised content – at least for a few weeks.
However, eventually many marketers repurpose their list.
End result? Subscribers tune out – or unsubscribe.
Example: Some marketers brag about providing a weekly newsletter full of free articles, tips
and solutions. After a few weeks however, subscribers are disappointed to find their inboxes filling up with
nothing more than ads. Eventually they drift away because their expectations are no longer being met.
Does that mean you shouldn’t send product pitches to your subscribers? Of course NOT. What it means is that you
need to set the right expectations up front – and then deliver on your promises.
If you promise to review (and promote) all the new niche products, then do it. If you promise to provide a new
article every week, then deliver it. And if you promise to send a newsletter just once every two weeks, then stick
to that timeline.
Point is, it doesn’t matter what you send to your subscribers – as long as you’re giving them exactly what they
expect (and what you promised).
2. Interact With Your List
People buy from those they know, like and trust. And one way to build trust is to start interacting with your
list.
You can do that by posting some of your newsletter articles on your blog and encouraging readers to discuss
them. If you get comments, be sure to reply to as many of the comments as possible.
You can also ask for feedback, ask your readers to answer quick polls or even ask them to join your Twitter,
Facebook or other social media network. If they do, be sure to interact.
The point is, you should start interacting personally rather than delivering monologues to your readers. Doing
so should increase your profits!
3. Be Honest
You should only promote products that you’d use yourself and/or recommend to your best friend. Doing so builds
trust with your subscribers and gives you a good reputation.
Secondly, you should always be honest when you review a product. Not only should you list the good points of the
product, but you should also list the perceived flaws, too. Doing so will actually increase your sales, because
readers will trust you more!
4. Embed Your Promotions
You don’t need to hard sell to make money. Instead, you can weave links and recommendations directly into an
article – indeed, many of your readers will see it as a friendly recommendation and not an advertisement.
Example: Let’s suppose you’re writing an article about how to set up a website. One of the steps includes buying
a domain name. You can recommend your favorite domain name registrar using your affiliate link. Your readers will
be grateful for the recommendation (and they won’t even see it as a promotion).
5. Ask for Referrals
Follow the four tips above and you should have a more responsive and profitable list. Now here’s how to make
more money: Ask for referrals.
It’s simple: At the end of every email, ask your readers to forward your newsletter to a friend who could
benefit from the information. The subscribers you get from these referrals may end up being some of the most
responsive people on your list, since word of mouth advertising is so powerful.
Summary
Your ability to build a trusting relationship with your subscribers directly affects how much money you make
with your list.
So use your list as a tool to build relationships… and the money will follow!
